Mesothelioma Overview

Mesothelioma is the cancer of the membrane that covers the majority of the internal organs of the human body. This membrane is known as the mesothelium. The major cause of mesothelioma is the exposure to a mineral that is found abundantly in nature. This mineral known as asbestos was also used in various domestic as well as commercial purposes in the earlier times. As a result millions of people were exposed to it during that period. A large majority of these people run the risk of developing mesothelioma.

The major predicament with mesothelioma is that it has a long latency period that could be as long as 30 to 40 years. The asbestos particles once inside the human body stay dormant for this long period. After such a long time they start interfering with the normal functioning of the mesothelial cells which leads to the development of the cancerous tissues. Once these changes take place in the mesothelium the patient starts showing certain symptoms that indicate the presence of this cancer. An additional cause of worry with mesothelioma is that the symptoms of this cancer are not specific to this disease only. The symptoms of mesothelioma are similar to many other commonly occurring diseases like pneumonia. As a result the diagnosis of this disease is quite difficult. It happens many times that even though the patient might be showing the symptoms of mesothelioma but the physician is unable to diagnose them as such. As a result by the time the disease is detected as the cancer of mesothelioma, the cancer has already meandered into the final stages. In such a case the best that a physician can do is to alleviate the pain and suffering of the patient and make his life more comfortable.

It is high time that the concerned authorities wake up to the dangers posed by the asbestos and take concrete actions to stop its use and mining. Many of the governments have already banned the use of asbestos and many are reviewing their policies regarding this mineral. Nevertheless a concerted effort is required from all the international agencies to successfully fight against this disease.
