Mesothelioma Gene Therapy

It has been found that a particular gene in the DNA structure is altered by the development of cancerous tissue in the human body. In gene therapy the scientists try to rectify this anomaly at the DNA level itself. In general there are two types of gene therapies that have been found to be useful. They are:

The Knockout Gene Therapy: In this type of therapy those products of the gene that aid the growth of the cancerous cells are targeted. The main aim is to destroy these products and thus stop the further growth of the cancerous cells.

The Replacement Gene Therapy: This therapy involves the replacement of the gene that is mutated by the cancerous growth with a healthy gene. The main aim of the doctors in this therapy is to promote the healthy growth of cells by removing the mutated gene and replacing it with the healthy gene. This therapy also stops the process of angiogenesis which in these circumstances aids the formation of cancerous growth.
