DIAGNOSING A TERMINAL MESOTHELIOMA-TYPE ILLNESS
This process of diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plans are intricate, complex and developing as we speak. Here are some of the sequential and diagnostic tools that s used to deal effectively with mesthelioma.
- An initial medical examination
- chest x-ray
- CT scan
- bronchoscopy, using a viewing scope to look inside the lungs
- Tissue sample and biopsy.
- Open-needle, open or with a camera or scope
- Diagnostic surgery
- Various hospital procedures that requires anesthesia, but is not usually painful.
- Tissue sample testing
Here are some of the intricacies involved in the diagnosis:
- Fluid build-up can be seen and heard.
- Biopsy and pathology is necessary or a formal diagnosis
- There are other illnesses that can also have similar symptoms.
- It is an extremely difficult and complex diagnosis
- Lots of laboratory testing and medical procedures to ensure accuracy are essential
- Thickening and spread can be clearly seen and detected, causing restriction, pressure and breathing becomes problematic.
- Some mesotheliomas get increasingly and severely disabling, terminal
- Sometimes asbestos is the clear culprit, sometimes not. Diagnoses like asbestosis and mesothelioma ensure less areas of gray r misunderstanding.
- There are still some uncertainties
- Cancers like kidney, GI tract and ovary are not yet directly linked to asbestos and research is ongoing.
- Medical examinations and tests are the only sure way to determine is mesothelioma is present.
- Exposure does not mean that you will contract the disease necessarily
What should you do if you have not been diagnosed with mesothelioma, but are aware of asbestos exposure and potential risk:
- Keep a watchful eye on your medical condition and have any symptoms checked out right away
- Regular check-ups are crucial and be sure that you inform your medical practitioner about any concerns you might have, including asbestos exposure, occupational hazards and the like.
- Always remember that this disease takes time to develop and even-though you do not have any symptoms today, does not mean that you could not develop lung cancer and related lung diseases.
- You will always be at a slightly higher risk due to the exposure
